The importance of proper skin care with compression

Most of us are aware that the skin is the largest organ of the body with seven different layers and covering approximately 20 square feet on average. Proper skin care is important to nearly everyone who wants to look their best and prevent damage from the sun and other elements in our environment.  Our skin naturally becomes drier as we age due to the cells in the outer layer working less efficiently over time.  This outer layer acts as a protective barrier, keeping the other layers moist and healthy.

You may find your skin may seem drier when regularly wearing compression stockings. This is because the same materials that manage the moisture to regulate hot and cold temperatures can also affect the skin. The high-wicking materials will pull microscopic amounts of moisture from the skin causing the dryness.

How to keep your skin healthy in compression stockings

It is important to moisturize your legs before AND after wearing your compression stockings.  There are many choices when it comes to moisturizers and they come in several forms – lotions, cremes, gels, serums, sprays, and more. Some products do not interact well with compression garments and it may take some experimentation. Here are some helpful hints:

  • Use of gel-like products are best for use prior to the application of compression stockings because they will absorb in the skin quickly and allow for easier application.
  •  Use deep penetrating cremes or lotions for post use of your compression garment. They have more time to work and rejuvenate the skin.
  •  Look for products with healing properties, such as horse chestnut extract, that have been helpful for people who suffer from varicose veins or other vein health conditions.
  • Products with a menthol ingredient can be helpful for those who may be looking for a cooling effect.
